The Congregation

The Community of Joy is a unique mix of both foreigners and Koreans who worship together in a Korean church designed to welcome foreigners and their families. We wonder if you might think outside the box and consider worshipping in a Korean church versus a completely Western-oriented church. That alternative is Community of Joy (COJ), an English ministry and worship service of the Chun Sung Methodist Church (CSMC). The worship services are held in its own building provided by CSMC.

There are so many things I enjoy about COJ, but I would count the friendships with some wonderful Christians the most rewarding. My COJ friends are very supportive and really understand the struggles I have working and living in Korea. They help me understand Korean culture by allow- ing me to ask as many questions as I’d like. I also enjoy the myriad of interesting conversations during the fellowship time with such knowledgeable professionals in the areas of science, environmental education and even the Korean mili- tary. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone to the COJ members for help over the past years, they’re always will- ing to help.

Our family has been long-time active members of several international congregations in Daejeon. We chose to attend the “more comfortable” Western-oriented worship settings sometimes merely because it was easier. Not long ago, we realized that we were missing an incredible opportunity that God was placing before us to worship with our sisters and brothers in Korea, a land we have spent so much time. Since joining COJ, we have learned so much about this country and its unique Christian Church. We have been welcomed by so many wonderful Christian Korean sisters and brothers and have made some truly lasting friendships.
